ABOUT HOME - Back in Finland her father, who had taught and encouraged her to paint enrolled her in art school where she began her study of life drawing. Moving to Germany in 1970 to study for her M.A. at the College of Fine Arts in Hamburg, Bartsch says: ‘I went completely wild in a scene that I would describe as experimental living’. After finishing her degree in 1978 Bartsch was offered a position in Co. Kerry to set up a fine art tapestry weaving studio. She came with her young family, working several years in Ballinskelligs before setting up her own painting studio in Caherciveen. She fell in love with living in Ireland, enjoying a lively exchange with artists, writers and musicians.

Many of them generously helped her by giving her work the exposure needed to establish future recognition and successes. In recent years Bartsch has had a low profile recovering from ill health, all the while exhibiting in group shows in well known galleries as the Taylor Galleries in Dublin and Tom Caldwell in Belfast.

FROM TIME TO HOME
“The subject of my previous work has been houses once occupied but long vacant. I explored the impermanent aspect of inhabitants who move through houses and rooms, leaving little of their personality behind. In this show, the places are being lived in. The first paintings I did had one or two of my personal belongings placed into the scene of abandoned rooms. Gradually I progressed to paint where I live and where I work. This personal environment is only partly a self portrait but more so a depiction of all of us, living now in this age and place and time.”

“As I come from a family background of displaced people after the war, and grew up in different countries like Finland and Syria, I was raised to believe that home is where you make it and how you make it.”
