Finola Cooney
Cooney will exhibit a number of paintings in the Summer Group Exhibition August 16th - September 30th. The Mcbride Gallery aims to highlight her practice and position as an emerging contemporary Irish artist.
Biography:
Born in England in 1966 of Irish parents, Finola spent many childhood summers in Kinsale, Co. Cork, later moving permanently to the Beara Peninsula in West Cork.
Finola Cooney is essentially an abstract artist for whom landscape is essentially a starting point, or trigger for the creative process which follows as she develops colours, form and, notably, textures on paper and canvas. Her work derives partly from a deep impression left by landscape forms, textures and patterns, and the emotions evoked by them, the magical, almost subconscious impact of the half-obscured traces of the past which are left by people who are gone - just as "a spider dies and is gone but leaves its trace in the form of a broken web". Finola holds a BA (hons) in Modern languages in Literature, and has been painting since moving to the Beara Peninsula in 1991.
