Eileen Healy
Works by Eileen Healy will be exhibited in the Mezzanine of the Mcbride Gallery, Killarney, to coincide with the exhibition of new works by abstract artist Bridget Flannery.
Biography
Eileen Healy was born in Youghal and completed her studies at the Crawford College of Art in 1988, when she won the prize of student of the year award. The following year she was artist in residence at the Lavit Gallery in Cork and then became a studio member of the Cork Artists Collective for 5 years.
Artist’s Practice
A naturally talented figurative artist across many media including oil, pastel and pencil, Eileen mainly works from a life model in her studio at the Backwater artists’ Studio. She believes that this highly disciplined practice keeps her work fresh, alive and vibrant. In the studio, she is intrigues by the effects of light and shadow on the body and face, both with nudes and portraits.
Exhibitions & Commissions
Eileen has shown both in solo and group shows including the Arnotts portrait award exhibition, the Triskel Arts Centre, Cork, RHA, Dublin and the Vangard Gallery, Cork. She has received many commissions including a portrait of Cork playwright and novelist Cónal Creedon for the Crawford Gallery series of portraits of Irish writers by Irish artists. The image can be seen on the cover of his most recent publication, 2nd City Trilogy. Her work has been collected by institutions such as University College, Cork; OPW; AIB and Roches Stores.
Residencies, Promotion of the Arts, Memberships & Teaching
She has taken part in many residencies including Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Burren Art College, Cill Riallig and Nantes in Brittany. On these residencies she has expanded her work into landscape in graphite, pastel and oil. Eileen has been a member of the Backwater Artists Group in Cork for over 7 years. She also teaches life drawing adult education classes at the Crawford College of Art.
